What is rewind slitting and how does it work?

Rewind slitting, also referred to as roll slitting, is a manufacturing process used mainly in the packaging, film and paper industry. In this process, a material wound on a roll is divided into precise longitudinal or cross sections by rotating cutting tools. Rewind slitting allows large material rolls to be broken down efficiently into smaller, exactly cut pieces that are then used in further processes. The technique is particularly important for the processing of films, paper and plastics, which are often delivered in large roll formats.

Basic sequence of rewind slitting

The rewind slitting process starts with a large material roll, containing either paper, plastic film or similar materials. In the rewind slitting machine this roll is cut to a precise, pre-set width. The rewind slitting machine is equipped with a cutting tool that works either as a rotary knife or as a longitudinal cutter and cuts the material along the desired lines in a continuous flow.

  4. Maintenance and adjustment: Rewind slitting machines require regular maintenance and adjustment to ensure stable performance and long service life. In particular the cutting tool must be checked regularly for wear and replaced if necessary.

Applications of rewind slitting

Rewind slitting is used in various industries and applications, for example:

  • Electronics industry: Rewind slitting is also used in the processing of insulating films and metal foils in the electronics industry, to cut precise parts such as circuits and film for display technologies.
  • Paper and board industry: Rewind slitting is used to manufacture paper rolls, paper strips and cardboard packaging. It enables the precise production of paper rolls for newspapers, paper webs for printing shops and packaging materials.
  • Packaging industry: Film rolls are divided by rewind slitting into manageable sizes for the packaging and labelling of products. This is also the case with aluminium and plastic films for food packaging and products such as adhesive tape.
  • Textile industry: Rewind slitting is also used in the textile industry, where it is used to produce textile webs, ribbons and packaging films.
